Book Reading Group

Literary Ladies

Literary Ladies is a reading group open to women from the church and the community. The goal of Literary Ladies is
to read literature and discuss the text in light of a Christian worldview. Books are selected based on their impact on our
culture, their time-proven insight into the human condition, and their importance for understanding our world. Types of
literature include, but are not limited to, biography, history, play, poetry, novel, and short story.

Reading from a Christian perspective means reading literature with a critical viewpoint. Literary Ladies are encouraged to
consider the author’s intended meaning and to evaluate that meaning by the truth of God’s Word.

The selection of books is not restricted to safe topics and sanitized language. Thoughtful Christians should be aware of
their Father’s world and be able to interact with unsaved people and their ideas. Unbelieving authors are able to say true,
beautiful and good things about the world because God has created them in His image and has sovereignly extended His
common grace to all. Care is taken to avoid obscene literature and warnings will be given about difficult literature; however,
some readers may still be offended by certain book selections. Literary Ladies are encouraged to skip any reading that is
objectionable to them.

Literary Ladies are strongly encouraged to read the group’s founding book, Reading Between the Lines: A Christian Guide to Literature
by Gene Edward Veith, Jr. Please contact Leann Erickson to borrow a copy.
